My approach

How counselling with me works

We talk about what’s happening for you now, and look at the patterns underneath it. I work using Transactional Analysis (TA), a talking therapy that explores your personality and how it has been shaped by your experiences.

  • We start with what’s happening now, even something small from your day
  • We notice patterns that keep repeating, such as putting everyone else first
  • We look at how earlier experiences may shape how you think, feel and relate to others
  • You learn TA’s ideas as we go, so you can spot an old way of reacting and choose differently

I sometimes describe holding feelings in as laying a patio over them: you press everything down and carry on, but, in my words, “weeds will still grow in that dark place.” Counselling is a process rather than a quick fix, and we work at a pace that suits you.

Questions

Before you get in touch

If your question isn’t here, just ask.

What happens on the free introductory call?

It lasts about 10–15 minutes and is a chance for us both to decide whether we can work together. Trust matters in therapy, so I’ll listen to what you’re hoping for, explain how I work and answer your questions. There’s no obligation to book.

How long is a session, and how much does it cost?

Sessions last 60 minutes and cost £50, whether in person, online or outdoors. The introductory call is free. You can pay by card, bank transfer or cash. I ask for 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel; late cancellations are charged at £25. Fees and policies

What if I don’t know what to say?

That’s completely normal, and it’s part of what I’m trained to help with. We can start with something that happened that day. One small topic can open up into a much deeper conversation.

Do you offer online counselling?

Yes, for adults in the UK, at the same £50 fee as face-to-face sessions. More about Online Counselling

Do you offer couples counselling?

No. I work one to one with adults aged 18 and over. I don’t offer couples counselling or work with children and young people.

Is counselling confidential?

What you share stays private, within some limits I’ll explain clearly at the start, for example if someone is at serious risk of harm or the law requires me to share information. I work within the BACP Ethical Framework.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. This is private counselling, so you can contact me directly. If cost is a barrier, you can also refer yourself online to Bolton Talking Therapies, the free NHS service for people aged 16 and over in Bolton.
